angling in denbighshire

The local area boasts some of the best fishing in the country, with sea, river and lake fishing all within half an hour of the village. Some of the local fishing spots are detailed below.

All of the reservoirs on Denbigh Moor are exposed and cold. I once read an article in a magazine stating that summer started and ended in July! This is a little harsh but not too far wrong. Be prepared for wind, freak showers and sub-zero temperatures at any time of year.

Local Reservoirs

Llyn Brenig

The largest local reservoir (919 acres) high on denbigh moor. A stocked (apparently about 30,000 fish this year!) reservoir for the fly fisherman only, and a bit expensive for my pocket (I think about £23 a day), but excellent if you can afford it. One of the top trout venues in the UK, and host to international competitions.

Llyn Alwen

A large reservoir at 368 acres, this is quieter than the Brenig but also stocked with Rainbow Trout, in addition to wild brownies, perch and pike. A bit cheaper at £12.00 for a day ticket. The reservior allows multi-fishing methods, however the top end above the footbridge is fly only. The dam end is best for Rainbow trout, but I must admit that late in the season they tend to get stuffed full of sweetcorn which is a little disheartening.

Llyn Aled

My usual haunt. A small quiet fishery at 180 acres, this is the highest of the reservoirs and very exposed. The wind blows straight off Snowdonia, so it is cold the whole year round. This month (June) I still need 5 layers and gloves, howver when the wind stops it is a truly beautiful spot. Has wild brownies, perch and pike (see my fishing blog). A day ticket cost £4.00 and includes the Aled and Aled Isaf (see below) and is available from the Llyn Brenig visitor centre.

Aled Isaf

A 200 acre, fairly deep reservoir with perch and some big pike (over 20lb), hovever the past few years has seen it dry out completely in the summer. The result has been impressive and good for finding all those lost lures, but unfortunately kills all the decent sized fish.

Llyn Bran

A small reservoir owned by Denbigh & Clwyd Angling Club. Reasonably sheltered and good for pike, but plently of reeds make fishing hard work.
